Listening Assignment 2

Hi guys,
for your second listening assignment you will focus on pronunciation, combined with the topic of emphasizing subjects or objects in describing events (passive voice).

Instructions

Note: if the links on this page don't work you can go to Google Drive and download the materials I mention here. The folder is called Rasputin Assignment, it is the your class folder.

Follow this link and download a handout about Rasputin.
1. The first part of the assignment is to read carefully, identify unknown vocabulary, and understand the text well.
2. The second part is to prepare the reading aloud of the text. Make sure you are able to pronounce words properly. Use online dictionaries to check out words you don't know how to pronounce.
3. The third part is to visit the website http://vocaroo.com/
There you will record the reading aloud of the text.
4. After you have recorded the text, you will post the link of it to this blog. That is, below in the comments' section.
5. You have until midnight this Friday to post your recording.
6. You will have until Sunday to listen to at least two recordings from any of your classmates. You will make a short comment about the quality of the recording. Be nice in the way you express about the others' work: for example, you did a good job as far as fluency. There are some words that could be pronounced better, for example... the word xxx is pronounced in this way (you can use phonetic transcription or link to the pronunciation of the word).
Listen for good volume, clear pronunciation of words, intonation and rhythm (maybe to slow, maybe to fast).
If you feel that after listening to your classmates, you would like to improve your recording you can submit it again. If you don't submit by Friday and submit on Sunday for the first time, I won't grade the late submission.
6. Going back to the Rasputin handout, since we are working on passive voice these days, I would like you to read the biography carefully and identify the different types of passive voice. A good summary of the different ways passive voice appears is found in this handout. So your job is to highlight with any color the examples of passive voice in the biography and upload this handout to the Google drive folder: Second Listening assignment (remember the rules of submitting assignment to Google Drive> you are not allow to open or download your classmates' assignments). The submission of this part of the assignment is due Sunday before midnight.

You will be graded on the basis of the submission of the vocaroo recording, the participation in the blog, and the upload of the highlighted biography.

Let me know if this is all clear.

Here's a classic that talks about Rasputin.

    1. Hello samuel, remember to read the title as well. In your pronunciation check the word Assassin ( /əˈsæsɪn/) and also try to vocalized a little bit more, because in some cases like examples, you miss the final "s". But you did a great job, actually beacuse you remind me how to read the name of the czar with "the second" instead of 2

    1. Hello Charlie!

I think you did a really good job in general, you speak fluently in the majority of your recording. Sometimes you started to be like really trying not to mess up a word and began to lose the pattern in the intonation that you had, so focus on that. I think you're really good so don't worry!

There were a couple of words that end in -ed that you didn't pronounce correctly like "alleged", "traveled", "revealed" and "killed". The -ed pronunciation wasn't clear, so check those.

      And finally these:
monastery: in this one you made the stress at the middle, is in the beginning. /ˈmɒnəstərɪ/
Drowning: this one you said with "o" instead of "a". /ˈdraʊnɪŋ/
Hemophilia: this one you pronounced "e" instead of "i", kinda like how you would say it in spanish.
St. Petersburg: and this one you also said "e" instead of "i", here's a link that shows the correct pronunciation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFd6-feBy2M

Again, I think you did a pretty good job! See you in class!

    1. Hello Leidy,

I liked your recording, your voice is clear and it does that the content could be understood, I do not find any mistake in the pronunciation, the intonation and rhythm that you have is very good. Only I think that the pronunciation of the word ‘Siberia’ can be better, here I leave the link with the pronunciation of the word: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/es/diccionario/ingles/siberia?q=Siberia

      Good job!

    4. Hi, Leidy
Regarding the Lauras's comment, I want to highlight your voice tone, it is perfect to understand and if you want to teach, this is a big tool to do a great job, people are going to understand you easily. Furthermore, I have a little recommendation for you and it's about the word 'assassin' because the first vowel it is pronounced with /ə/. Not much to say, just great job and keep that big strategy.

Your pronunciation is clear. I consider there are some words that you could take into account:

      → Cyanide ---- http://www.wordreference.com/es/translation.asp?tranword=cyanide
      → Presumably ---- http://www.wordreference.com/es/translation.asp?tranword=presumably
      → Effect ---- http://www.wordreference.com/es/translation.asp?tranword=effect

      Nice job Fernando:)

    3. Hello Andres.

It was nice to learn from your exercise. I´ve identified some aspects that I think you would improve. The first one is that you should look for a quieter place, due I couldn´t understand some words because of the external noise. The second aspect is related with the pronounciation of some words like "natural" and "chindren" (remember that It is a irregular plural). Finally, in my opinion, It´s a good idea that you work on the irregular verbs pronounciation, and linking; It could help you to improve the fluency.
Thanks for share your job !

Something that I like about your pronunciation is that you pronounce the English stop consonants very well.
The only correction is the word "drowning" remember that is pronounced \ˈdrau̇niŋ\
Well done, keep on the good job.

But I think you shoud pay attention to the proununciation of -ed ending of regular verbs.

      Remeber:
      /t/ possessed -- voiceless
/d/ received -- voiced or when the final sound is a vowel.

I really liked your recording, it had a very good volume and your pronunciation was very clear. I could understand every word you said! Take into account not to pronounce words that are not written and don't leave out letters from the text. Also, pay attention to the pronunciation of -ed in the past, sometimes you don't it.
The pronunciation of these words wasn’t always bad but you can work on them:
      -Rasputin /ˈrɑsputɪn/
-Sixteen /sɪksˈtiːn/ (take into account the stress, sometimes it sounds like if you were saying “sixty”)
      -synopsis /sɪˈnɒpsɪs/
      -Russia /ˈrʌʃə/
      -czar /zɑr/
      -Alleged /əˈlɛdʒd/
      -Siberia /saɪˈbɪərɪə/
      -Licentious /laɪˈsɛnʃəs/
      -Meant /mɛnt/
      -Presumably /prɪˈzjuːməblɪ/
      -East /iːst/
      -Petersburg /’pɪtərsburg/
      -Push /pʊʃ/
      -Cyanide /ˈsaɪəˌnaɪd/

And it is World War I (one, not first)

Just a few words you can get better on:

      Russian /ˈrʌʃən/
      Presumably /prɪˈzjuːməblɪ/

    1. hi Andrew

you did a great job, although there be little pronunciation mistakes as Czar which the correctly pronunciation would be /zɑːr/ according to cambridge Dictionary, as well as you must be careful pronunciating words like supernatural, the correct pronuncation is /ˌsuːpəˈnætʃrəl/
also you must consider that countries or cities in english are a little different from Spanish for example Russia or Siberia has a different pronunciation in english here is russia/ˈrʌʃ.ə/ and Siberia /saɪˈbɪr.i.ə/.

be careful pronunciating (ea) sounds we pronounce (i), also with ed- ending in past tense.

to sum up you did great job, please try to read a little bit slow because sometimes you said words that weren't in the text for example you said undetermine or something like that instead of saying undermine :)
